Jayasree Basu, PhD

Dr. Basu is a Senior Economist and led the Intramural Research Program of the Center for Primary Care in AHRQ. Dr. Basu has developed and led numerous research projects focusing on health care access issues in primary care, with a particular emphasis on preventable hospitalization, racial and ethnic disparities, Medicare and Medicaid managed care, geospatial analysis, and specialty referral patterns. Dr. Basu’s research has been widely published in reputed journals, including Health Services Research, Medical Care, Health Economics, Medical Care Research and Review, American Journal of Managed Care, Health and Place, and Medicare & Medicaid Research Review. She has also made many presentations at national and international professional society meetings. Dr. Basu’s most recent interest included research on chronically ill complex patients as she oversaw a large research portfolio addressing issues on prevention and financing among patients with multiple chronic conditions.

Dr. Basu previously worked in the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services where she conducted evaluations of various legislation-mandated Medicare and Medicaid demonstrations and led special research studies to address National and State health data and policy issues. Prior to that, she served as Assistant Director for Policy Analysis in Maryland Health Resources Planning Commission, and directed the development of statewide need projections to forecast future demand for health resources in Maryland. Dr Basu is a member of international Health Economics Association and American Society for Health Economists.
