Jim P. Stimpson, PhD

Dr. Stimpson earned his doctorate in sociology and received additional training as a postdoctoral fellow in social epidemiology. The focus of his research has been the social determinants of population health and inequalities. His goal as a researcher is to discover, communicate, and apply data-driven discoveries into policy change. Dr Stimpson’s research has been funded by numerous organizations including the National Cancer Institute, CMS Innovation Center, the Health Care Cost Institute, and Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. He has published more than 100 journal articles, book chapters, and policy reports, which have appeared in leading journals such as Health Affairs, Academic Medicine, and American Journal of Public Health.

Dr. Jim Stimpson was previously Associate Dean for Academic and Faculty Affairs and Professor of Health Policy in the City University of New York School of Public Health. Prior to CUNY, he worked at the University of Nebraska Medical Center where, in addition to his faculty role, he held several leadership positions including founding director of the Center for Health Policy, Senior Policy Analyst for Government Affairs, and Graduate Program Director for Health Services Research, Administration, and Policy.

Dr. Stimpson teaches in the area of health policy and research methods. Dr. Stimpson has created and managed several graduate educational programs (MPH, PhD, certificates) over the years. He also led the Nebraska Health Policy Academy, which was a training initiative to provide the public health workforce with the tools to advocate for effective public health policy change.

His research interests include Cancer, Immigrant health, Health and place or built environment, Health services research, Health disparities, Health policy and Urban health.
