Kent D. Seltman, PhD

Kent Seltman completed a 16-year career at Mayo Clinic in 2008 and now holds the title of Mayo Clinic Marketing Division Chair Emeritus. From 1992-2006, he served as the Marketing Division Chair for Mayo Clinic. Also, he was the founding leader of the Brand Team, and in that capacity for more than a decade, he provided day-by-day oversight of the Mayo Clinic brand as well as brand consultation, brand education, and brand-related research.

In 1964, Seltman graduated from Union College as an English major. He then immediately began graduate studies in English at the University of Nebraska. Dr. Seltman, who holds M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in English Literature (University of Nebraska, Lincoln), was for 19 years an English professor, including eight years as a department chair at Pacific Union College. During his first healthcare position as director of public relations and marketing communications at Florida Hospital in Orlando, Florida, Seltman earned his MBA at Rollins College. In 1987, he joined Loma Linda University Medical Center to develop the Loma Linda International Heart Institute where he was the director for five years before joining Mayo Clinic in 1992.

Seltman facilitated the sabbatical research of Professor Leonard Berry who studied healthcare service at Mayo Clinic during the 2001-2002 academic year. Berry, distinguished professor of marketing at Texas A & M University, and Seltman are coauthors of Management Lessons from Mayo Clinic, McGraw-Hill, 2008. The book has been translated into eight foreign languages. It was recognized as the Social Sciences Book of the year in China in 2009.

Dr. Seltman writes and lectures widely to professional and academic audiences on healthcare and service marketing issues. From 2002-2005, he served as editor of Health Services Marketing, published by the American Marketing Association. He is experienced as a keynote speaker as well as a workshop leader and a consultant in healthcare marketing and branding. He has appeared on CNBC, Fox News Financial, and Yahoo Financial, and has recently lectured in Iceland, the Netherlands, the Philippines, France, Belgium, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Brazil, and Russia in addition to many audiences throughout the USA. In December 2017, Seltman completed his 22nd consulting/lecturing trip to China since 2010.
